This Project aims to build a Global maritime Communication System and to launch a Global Maritime Communications service created on the VHF Data Exchange System Technology. Saab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Orbcomm and AAC Clyde Space.

AOS is the new denomination in which all the three commodities will be working together to develop the VDES services hastily.

The companies will be collaborating on the services directed towards the Clients as well as the Safety of Navigation Services.

The company mainly focuses on establishing the Global Communication network from Ship to Ship & Ship to Shore.

“Long term, the parties intend to create a global VDES communication network with low latency and high, two-way bandwidth for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication everywhere on the globe," said the Saab in one of its Proclamations.

This project will be executed in the stages that comprise both the terrestrial and the space-based demonstration of the selected Applications.

In August 2020, The Saab, AAC Group, and Orbcomm announced a collaboration to develop the space-based VDES system.

The AAC will supply the 3U demonstration satellite under this project which is expected to launch in the 2nd Half of the next year.

This communication system is fully loaded with a high range of networks from the coastline to anywhere in the Ocean with the additional Capability of the Space-based VDES which results in the up-gradation of the coastal system into a Global Maritime system.

The VDES can provide almost 32 times larger bandwidth as compared to the present AIS communication. VDES has an E-Navigation which will help in the better navigation as well as allows savings of the fuels and emissions up to 25%.
