Felicitated by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals as “Woman of the year 2019”, earning herself a place in the top 100 women in shipping by All About Shipping UK in 2020 and 2021, Ms. Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Director of Sitara Shipping Limited, also the founder of Maritime Sheeo, has well deservedly been in the limelight for years for her untiring efforts to empower women in the shipping industry. Recently, she earned herself one more feather in her hat by being appointed the lead ambassador for India by EyeSea, a global NGO addressing marine pollution that contaminates ocean life and threatens the sustainability of the maritime industrial ocean.

EyeSea, as the name suggests, is on the lookout for the sea-caring eyes of mariners, recreational sailors, environment activists, and the public to accumulate their encounters and evidence of unauthorized dumping of hazardous wastes, chemicals, and fuels into the ocean. To enable quicker data collection, EyeSea developed its app named EYESEA , a platform for uploading photographs and videos of the particular sea routes where marine life is succumbing to severe man-made hazards or accidental chemical or garbage spills. Integrating such data into maritime charts will now help map the red-light areas and initiate quick clean-up drives associating with various communities to help secure marine life and resources.

EyeSea’s founder, Graeme Somerville-Ryan, comments on how several circles could make a globe of difference, “What can one person do? For a start, one person could take a picture. That picture tells us what is going on. A lot of pictures can make a map. And in true maritime fashion, a map will tell us where we need to go and what we need to do.” As the envoy for EyeSea India, Ms. Sanjam Sahi Gupta agrees with him opining, “Sea pollution is a serious threat to the maritime industry. The negative impact is not restricted only to that part of the ocean, it extends far beyond the source of the pollutant and endangers the precious marine life / ecosystem as well as the human inhabitation of the nearby shores. EyeSea is a path-breaking initiative to address this problem, catch the pollution source, and admonish the repeat offenders. It is my pleasure to be associated with EyeSea and contribute towards spreading awareness about Ocean pollution in India and working towards its elimination”.

Besides being one of the pioneers in encouraging women to escalate the ladders of the maritime industry, Ms Sanjam Sahi Gupta proves her sea-caring insights as to the Indian ambassador in EyeSea, by expressing her plans to build a team of responsible maritime personnel and activists who would actively champion the cause for clean oceans. She also swears to save the Indian waters from illegal vessel dumping along with her eligible team. Despite a few handfuls giving it all to save the world from pollution, making humans aware of their inhuman greed has always been the biggest challenge that noble initiatives by organizations such as EyeSea try their best to preach. Ms. Sanjam Sahi Gupta is well known for her aura of influence and positivity that helped several women to break their shackles and escalate through the maritime industry in the past few years. As the Indian ambassador in EyeSea, it’s evident from her positivity that she would soulfully contribute to the cause of calling sea-carers onboard for watch-keeping and caretaking our maritime assets and life.
