Maritime tussle in the middle east tightens up, Iran is blamed for the drone attack in the Arabian Sea on the tanker off the coast of Oman, belonging to an Israeli millionaire.
MV Mercer Street, an oil product tanker built in 2013; sailing under the flag of Liberia fell victim to the armed drone attack- claiming the lives of two crew members- a Britain and a Romanian onboard the tanker on Thursday.
However, no country has taken responsibility for the attack. The region has been subjected to assaults in terms of commercial shipping and tensions are being linked over Iran’s tattered nuclear deal. Iran and its militia allies have been previously involved in similar attacks with the use of ‘suicide- drones’; that crash into targets and detonate the explosive payloads.
The US, Israel, and the UK have openly vouched for Iran’s involvement in the attack. While speaking in the cabinet on Sunday, Naftali Bennett- Israeli Prime Minister accused Iran of the drone attack and stated that these thuggish activities are intervening in the global interest in the shipping and trade domain. Israel also expected the international community to take a clear stand regarding the same.
Moreover, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the ‘Biden Administration’ is confident that the attack was conducted by Iran and a ‘similar response’ would follow. Adding up, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said London believed Iran had used one or more drones against the MV Mercer Street, calling it "deliberate, targeted, and a clear violation of international law".
Defying all the allegations, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told reporters that this was not the first time the Zionist Regime (Israel) has made such accusations against Iran and he claimed Israel of being a torchbearer of insecurity and violence.
It is not the first time the tensions have escalated between Iran and Israel have a frayed 2015 deal curbing Iran's nuclear program in the backdrop of the tussle. The tensions have been subjected to multiple drone attacks on Iran-Israel-operated vessels.
Israel claims that it has some intelligence reports citing Iran’s involvement in the attack, however, the UK, US, and Israel are yet to produce any reports/ evidence regarding the same.
